How to Prepare for Your Math Tutoring Session

Make the most of every session with these preparation tips. Both students and tutors play a role in creating effective, productive learning experiences.

For Students

Your role in making sessions successful

1. Bring All Materials

  • • Notebook & textbook
  • • Calculator (if allowed)
  • • Class notes & worksheets
  • • Completed & incomplete homework
  • • Computer open to DeltaMath, eSchool, Google Classroom

2. Review Material in Advance

  • • Go over the lesson from class before the session
  • • Identify specific areas of confusion
  • • Focus on topics you want to work on with the tutor

3. Prepare Questions

  • • Write down questions about concepts you didn't understand
  • • Focus on WHY a problem is difficult
  • • Take pictures of specific questions

4. Do Homework First

  • • Attempt homework to identify problem areas
  • • Mark questions where you got stuck
  • • Bring those specific questions to the session

5. Be Honest

  • • Don't guess or fake understanding
  • • Let the tutor know where you feel lost

6. Stay Focused

  • • Minimize distractions (turn off phone)
  • • Engage actively. Don't passively listen
  • • Take notes and ask for repetition if needed

7. Reflect After the Session

  • • Go over notes and problems solved during the session
  • • Attempt similar problems on your own to reinforce learning
  • • Write down follow-up questions for the next session
